Film thickness should reflect the product’s weight, shape, handling conditions, and need for puncture resistance. Lightweight retail items may use a thinner bag for clarity and efficient shrinking, while products with corners, heavier contents, or demanding shipping conditions may require a stronger material. Thicker film is not automatically better because it may need more heat, take longer to shrink, and produce a stiffer finished package. Confirm that the sealer and heat source can process the selected gauge. Consider whether the package will be stacked, shipped, displayed, refrigerated, or handled repeatedly. A sample run can reveal whether the film becomes cloudy, tears around corners, forms weak seals, or leaves excessive material. Choose the lightest suitable film that provides dependable protection.

The sealer must create a consistent closure across the full bag opening without burning, cutting, or leaving unsealed areas. An impulse sealer is suitable for many shrink-bag applications because it heats during the sealing cycle and cools while pressure is maintained. Select a sealing length longer than the bag opening so the entire width can be sealed in one cycle. Film material and thickness determine the required seal time and element type. High-volume operations may need a foot-operated or automatic machine to reduce operator fatigue. Test the seal before shrinking by gently pulling the closed edges apart. A weak seal may open under heat, while excessive heat can weaken the film beside the seal.

Some shrink bags are manufactured for food contact, while others are intended only for retail, industrial, or general packaging. Verify the film’s stated application and any required food-contact documentation before use. The packaging process should also suit the product’s temperature, moisture, storage, and shelf-life requirements. Shrink wrapping alone does not make food shelf stable and should not replace refrigeration, sanitation, vacuum packaging, or other controls when those are required. Consider whether the product has sharp bones, oily surfaces, steam, or irregular edges that could affect the film. Equipment used for food packaging should be cleaned and maintained according to the operation’s procedures. Never assume a clear bag is food safe simply because it resembles another approved material.

Bags reduce preparation time when products are similar in size because most edges are already sealed. They can make package sizing and operator training easier for short runs and repeat retail items. Centre-folded or single-wound shrink wrap film provides more flexibility when product dimensions change frequently or when long items do not fit standard bags. Film rolls may also reduce the need to store many bag sizes, although operators must measure and seal more edges. Evaluate material waste, loading speed, labour, package appearance, and the number of sizes handled. A business with a small range of products may benefit from bags, while mixed production may need roll film or a combination of both.
