A small bit works for tight filing holes or tags, while a larger bit may be needed for posts, rings, or specialty binding hardware. A dull bit can create rough holes, heat buildup, and paper welding, where sheets stick together around the hole. Wax helps the bit pass through the stack more cleanly. Cutting blocks support the bottom of the stack and should be replaced when worn. Chip cups or waste paths should be checked during use because paper plugs need a clear exit path.
