What Is a Sintra PVC Board?

Sintra is the original brand of expanded, closed-cell PVC board — a foamed plastic sheet that is rigid yet much lighter than solid PVC or wood. The smooth, low-gloss surface takes UV, solvent, and latex inks well, making it ideal for signage, point-of-purchase displays, directional signs, and mounted photographs. Because it is a plastic board, it is also moisture-resistant and durable enough for repeated handling and transport.

It is often called simply "PVC board" or "foam PVC board," and it is a popular choice when you want the clean look of a printed panel without the weight or cost of heavier substrates. For self-adhesive display projects, our adhesive-coated boards are a useful companion.

Choosing the Right Thickness

Thickness determines how rigid the board is and where you can use it. Use this guide to choose:

ThicknessRigidityBest For
3mm (1/8")Light, flexibleIndoor signs, mounted prints, lightweight displays
6mm (1/4")FirmFreestanding signs, durable displays, heavier graphics
10mm and upVery rigidOutdoor and structural signage, sandwich boards

For long-term outdoor use, a thicker gauge resists warping and flexing far better than thin board. When a project needs a foam-cored alternative, compare against our gator foam board.

Printing and Mounting on Sintra

The smooth matte face accepts direct printing with UV-curable, solvent, and latex inks for vibrant, high-resolution graphics, and it is equally good as a mounting substrate for adhesive-backed prints and photos. Because the board is dent- and scratch-resistant and stays flat, mounted work looks professional and survives handling. For finishing mounted boards, our board laminators add a protective layer over the print.

Cutting and Shaping Sintra Board

Sintra cuts much like wood. Thin sheets can be scored with a utility knife and snapped, while thicker panels are best cut with a band saw, table saw, router, or a sharp blade against a straight edge. Because it is a thermoplastic, it can also be heated and bent into curved or formed shapes that hold once cooled. For clean cuts on display boards, read our guide to foam board cutters for custom cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choose thickness by the size of the graphic, how it will be mounted, and how much handling it will get. Thinner 3mm Sintra works well for smaller indoor signs, mounted photos, menus, and lightweight displays. Thicker 6mm Sintra is better for larger panels, freestanding displays, directional signs, or pieces that may be moved often. Larger boards need more rigidity because even a durable material can flex when the sheet gets wide. If the finished sign will be installed outdoors, in a busy hallway, or on a trade show display, step up in thickness rather than choosing only by price. The board should stay flat after installation and still look clean at the edges.

Choose the board color around the graphic and the visible edge. White is usually best for full-color artwork, photo mounting, menu signs, and printed graphics because it gives the image a clean background and keeps colors looking bright. Black is useful when the edge of the board will show, when the design uses dark branding, or when you want the finished piece to have a framed look without adding a separate frame. If adhesive graphics will cover the entire face, color may seem less important, but the edge can still show after trimming. For brand work, match the board choice to the finished display, not just the sheet sitting on the table.

Sintra can work for both, but the right choice depends on your equipment and the finish you need. Print shops with the right flatbed printer may print directly to the smooth matte surface using suitable inks. Offices, sign teams, and display departments that do not direct-print usually mount adhesive graphics to the board. That approach is practical for posters, signs, photos, and retail graphics because the board gives the print a rigid, clean backing. If the project uses pressure-sensitive graphics, compare mounting boards so you can choose the right substrate for the display life, thickness, and finish. Good mounting helps the final piece stay smooth and professional.

Sintra PVC board can be used for many indoor and outdoor sign projects, but the setup matters. For short-term outdoor use, thinner material may be enough if the sign is mounted flat and protected from rough handling. For larger panels, longer use, or areas with wind and frequent contact, a thicker board is the safer choice because it resists flexing better. Also consider how the graphic is produced. Ink, adhesive film, and any protective laminate should be suitable for the expected exposure. If the board will sit in direct sun, rain, or a high-touch location, choose the heavier option and make sure the printed or mounted graphic is built for that use.

Cutting quality affects the final display almost as much as the print. Thin Sintra can often be scored with a sharp blade and snapped, while thicker sheets and repeated cuts are easier to handle with proper cutting equipment. Always support the sheet fully so the edge does not flex while cutting. If the board has a mounted graphic, measure from the image area and leave the border you want before making the final trim. For repeated sign work, larger sheets, or cleaner production edges, use board trimmers and cutters instead of a small utility knife. Clean cuts help the board look finished, especially when the edge remains visible.
