Sit Stand Workstations

Add the weight of every item that will move with the workstation, including monitors, monitor stands, laptop, keyboard, mouse, speakers, documents, and accessories. Do not base the decision only on the number of screens because monitor sizes and stands vary considerably. Leave some capacity below the stated maximum so the lifting mechanism can operate smoothly during normal use. Equipment that remains on the fixed desk surface does not need to be included, but cables must still have enough slack throughout the height range. Weight should also be distributed according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than concentrated at one edge. An overloaded or poorly balanced workstation may become difficult to adjust and can place unnecessary stress on the existing desk.

A monitor arm is useful when the screen height, viewing distance, or side-to-side position cannot be adjusted adequately using the original monitor stand. It can also free desktop space and make it easier to align multiple screens. Monitor arms must be compatible with the monitor weight, mounting pattern, desk attachment, and workstation design. Some sit-stand units have dedicated mounting points, while others may not safely accept a clamp or grommet arm. Check whether the arm moves with the workstation or remains attached to the fixed desk. Cable length and balance should be tested through the entire height range before regular use.

The keyboard platform should allow the forearms to remain roughly level, the shoulders to stay relaxed, and the wrists to avoid excessive bending. When standing, the platform should rise high enough that the user does not lean forward or lift the shoulders to type. When seated, it should not force the chair too far from the desk or leave insufficient legroom. Mouse space is equally important because a cramped pointing area can lead to repeated reaching. The workstation should allow small height adjustments rather than limiting the user to only two positions. Shoes, floor mats, chair height, and monitor position can all change the suitable setting. Comfort should be reassessed after working in each position for a normal period.

Cables must remain long enough and correctly routed when the workstation moves between its lowest and highest positions. Tight power, display, network, or accessory cables can pull equipment, disconnect devices, or restrict the lifting mechanism. Cable management products can help keep cords organised while allowing controlled movement. Attach cables with enough slack for adjustment, but avoid loose loops that can catch on handles, desk edges, or nearby objects. Power strips and docking stations should be positioned according to what moves with the workstation. Raise and lower the unit slowly during setup while watching every cable. This simple test can prevent damaged connectors and unexpected equipment movement.
