How Standard Melt Laminating Film Works
Standard melt film is a biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) base coated on one side with a heat-activated EVA or polyurethane adhesive. When the film passes through the heated rollers of a roll laminator at 270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit, the adhesive melts, flows into the micro-texture of the paper surface, and bonds as the laminated web cools downstream from the nip. The polyester base provides the clarity, stiffness, and abrasion resistance of the finished document. Top-coated versions add gloss or matte finishes to the polyester surface without changing the adhesive chemistry.
Standard melt film runs on any roll laminator that reaches 270 degrees Fahrenheit, which includes virtually all desktop, commercial, and wide-format thermal machines. Most machines default to the temperature range that standard film requires, so no special setting is needed when switching from another standard film to a different brand or thickness within the same category.
Standard Melt vs Low Melt Film
| Bond Temperature | 270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit | 210 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit |
| Bond Strength | Higher, maximum adhesion to paper | Adequate for most uses, slightly lower |
| Best Substrates | Laser prints, copier output, plain paper, card | Inkjet prints, dye-sub, coated photo paper |
| Risk on inkjet | High: smearing, discoloration, delamination | None: designed for inkjet compatibility |
Standard melt film is the correct choice for the large majority of office laminating jobs. Low melt is the exception, not the rule, and should be kept on hand specifically for inkjet and heat-sensitive output.
Choosing Standard Melt Laminating Film
Select film width to match or slightly exceed your laminator's throat width. Select thickness (mil) based on the rigidity needed: 1.5 mil for flexible folded items, 3 mil for everyday documents and menus, 5 mil for a stiffer card-like finish, and 10 mil for the most rigid document protection. Confirm core inner diameter (1 inch or 3 inch) against your machine's mandrel before ordering. Film from different manufacturers in the same width and thickness is interchangeable on the same machine as long as the core size matches.
Compatible Equipment
Standard melt film runs on any heated roll laminator. For everyday office volumes, see our office roll laminators; for high-volume production, see our commercial roll laminators. For guidance on choosing the right film type and thickness, see our knowledge base guide on laminating film.
