Standard Melt Laminating Film

Standard melt laminating film is the most widely used thermal roll laminating film, engineered to bond at 270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. At these temperatures, the film's adhesive layer melts fully and bonds with maximum strength to laser-printed documents, copier output, and paper printed on standard uncoated stock. The result is a clear, durable laminated finish with a stronger adhesive bond than low-melt alternatives, making standard film the preferred choice for menus, signage, presentation boards, and documents that will be handled repeatedly or stored long-term.

Standard melt film is not suitable for inkjet prints or heat-sensitive media: the 270 to 320 degree processing temperature causes inkjet inks and coated photo papers to smear, wrinkle, or delaminate. For those substrates, use low-melt film at a reduced temperature setting instead. Browse our full range of thermal roll laminating film and matching roll laminators for the machines that run them.

How Standard Melt Laminating Film Works

Standard melt film is a biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) base coated on one side with a heat-activated EVA or polyurethane adhesive. When the film passes through the heated rollers of a roll laminator at 270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit, the adhesive melts, flows into the micro-texture of the paper surface, and bonds as the laminated web cools downstream from the nip. The polyester base provides the clarity, stiffness, and abrasion resistance of the finished document. Top-coated versions add gloss or matte finishes to the polyester surface without changing the adhesive chemistry.

Standard melt film runs on any roll laminator that reaches 270 degrees Fahrenheit, which includes virtually all desktop, commercial, and wide-format thermal machines. Most machines default to the temperature range that standard film requires, so no special setting is needed when switching from another standard film to a different brand or thickness within the same category.

Standard Melt vs Low Melt Film

Bond Temperature270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit210 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit
Bond StrengthHigher, maximum adhesion to paperAdequate for most uses, slightly lower
Best SubstratesLaser prints, copier output, plain paper, cardInkjet prints, dye-sub, coated photo paper
Risk on inkjetHigh: smearing, discoloration, delaminationNone: designed for inkjet compatibility

Standard melt film is the correct choice for the large majority of office laminating jobs. Low melt is the exception, not the rule, and should be kept on hand specifically for inkjet and heat-sensitive output.

Choosing Standard Melt Laminating Film

Select film width to match or slightly exceed your laminator's throat width. Select thickness (mil) based on the rigidity needed: 1.5 mil for flexible folded items, 3 mil for everyday documents and menus, 5 mil for a stiffer card-like finish, and 10 mil for the most rigid document protection. Confirm core inner diameter (1 inch or 3 inch) against your machine's mandrel before ordering. Film from different manufacturers in the same width and thickness is interchangeable on the same machine as long as the core size matches.

Compatible Equipment

Standard melt film runs on any heated roll laminator. For everyday office volumes, see our office roll laminators; for high-volume production, see our commercial roll laminators. For guidance on choosing the right film type and thickness, see our knowledge base guide on laminating film.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard melt laminating film is thermal roll film that bonds at 270 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. It is the correct film for laser-printed documents, copier output, and anything printed on plain paper or uncoated card stock. Standard melt produces the strongest adhesive bond of any thermal film type, which makes it the preferred choice for menus, signage, and documents that will be handled repeatedly. Do not use it on inkjet prints or coated photo paper: the heat causes these substrates to smear, wrinkle, or delaminate. For those materials, use low-melt film at a reduced temperature setting instead. See our guide to laminating film thickness to match the right mil to your application.

Film thickness is measured in mil (thousandths of an inch). 1.5 mil is flexible and best for items that will be folded or rolled after lamination. 3 mil is the most popular general-purpose thickness and is the right choice for everyday documents, schedules, menus, and frequently-handled papers. 5 mil produces a noticeably stiffer result similar to a laminated card, preferred for signage and documents that need to stand on their own. 10 mil produces the most rigid finish and is used for ID-style items and documents that need maximum durability. Confirm that your laminator's roller pressure is compatible with your chosen thickness before committing to a full run.

Yes. Standard melt laminating film from different manufacturers in the same width and thickness runs interchangeably on any roll laminator that reaches the standard melt temperature range. The adhesive chemistry and polyester base are functionally identical across brands at the same specifications. The only critical compatibility factor is core inner diameter: 1 inch core film will not seat on a 3 inch mandrel without an adapter, and vice versa. As long as the width, thickness, and core size match, any brand substitution is safe.

The most common causes are running at too low a temperature (usually from leaving the machine in a low-melt or cold mode setting), feeding too quickly for the machine's heaters to fully activate the adhesive, using film that has been stored in a high-humidity environment (which can degrade the adhesive layer), or feeding documents that have moisture content from a recent printing run before the toner has fully cooled and set. Reset the machine to its standard melt temperature profile, reduce feed speed by one step, and allow laser-printed documents to cool for at least 15 minutes before laminating.

The core diameter refers to the inner diameter of the cardboard tube the film is wound on. A 1 inch core fits the smaller mandrel spindles found on most desktop and light commercial roll laminators. A 3 inch core fits the larger mandrels on heavy commercial and production laminators. Running 1 inch core film on a 3 inch mandrel requires an adapter sleeve; running 3 inch core film on a 1 inch mandrel is not possible without a mandrel replacement. When ordering film, check the mandrel diameter listed in your laminator's specifications, not just the throat width.
