Binding covers should be sized and punched to align with the paper so the finished document remains even. Create a template using an actual punched sample and use it for recurring work. Check both front and back pages in duplex documents because the binding margin changes sides when the sheet is turned during printing.

Pre-punched paper removes the separate punching step for the main document sheets, which can reduce labour and help maintain consistent hole placement. It is useful when many reports, manuals, notebooks, or presentations use the same size and binding pattern. The benefit is greatest when printing equipment feeds the stock reliably and the binding format rarely changes. It may be less practical for mixed systems because each punch pattern requires separate inventory. Covers, tabs, and inserted materials may still need punching unless they are purchased in a matching format. Estimate the time saved against storage needs, paper cost, and the risk of ordering the wrong pattern. A standardised workflow can make pre-punched stock especially effective.

Unpunched paper is better when the binding method changes frequently, documents require custom hole positions, or the same stock must serve both bound and unbound work. It also provides more flexibility when printers feed punched sheets poorly or when artwork runs close to the binding edge.
