A lighter sheet may suit large internal sets, while a heavier sheet can provide a firmer section divider or presentation feel. Include covers, tabs, and inserts when estimating the completed thickness. The printer, cutter, folder, and punch must all accept the chosen paper without curling, cracking, or misfeeding.

Unpunched paper remains adaptable until the final binding or filing method is selected. The same printed stock can be prepared for comb, coil, wire, ring filing, or another approved process when the equipment and margins support it. This reduces the risk of storing paper with a hole pattern that later becomes unsuitable. The flexibility does create an additional production step, so the available punch capacity and operator time should be considered. Large repeated jobs may be more efficient with pre-punched stock, while mixed short runs often benefit from unpunched sheets. Leave enough blank margin along every possible binding edge during design. Once printing enters that area, changing the finishing method becomes harder even though the paper has no holes.

Printing first is often practical because the printer receives a clean edge without holes, and the final punching position can be confirmed after any trimming or inspection. Punching first can work when the printer is approved for pre-punched stock and the loading orientation is controlled carefully. Pre-punched paper may be more efficient when the same pattern is used repeatedly and internal punching adds unnecessary labor.
