Lamination rolls add a protective film to the printed surface, while adhesive rolls prepare an item for mounting to another material. Combination formats can protect one side while applying adhesive to the other, allowing a graphic to be finished and mounted in one workflow. The right option depends on whether the piece needs surface protection, attachment, or both. Consider the print type, receiving surface, expected handling, and environmental exposure. High-tack adhesive may suit difficult or long-term mounting jobs, while standard or acid-free adhesive may be preferable for other materials. Process a sample through every finishing step, including trimming and mounting, before beginning a full production run.

The roll must fit the machine, and it must be wide enough to cover the printed item with suitable alignment allowance. Excess width increases waste, while a roll that is too narrow leaves uncovered edges or makes the job impossible. Group smaller pieces across the working width when the process allows, but leave enough separation for trimming. Record the layout, media width, and finished cut size for repeat jobs. Consistent planning can reduce waste without placing artwork too close to the film edge. Allow for edge trimming and any border that must remain around the finished graphic.

These problems can result from uneven tension, skewed loading, dirty rollers, unsuitable surfaces, excessive speed, or a film and print combination that does not bond well. Make sure both rolls are seated evenly and the media enters squarely. Printed material should be dry, clean, and flat. Silvering may appear when pressure-sensitive film does not make full contact with textured or heavily printed areas. Adjust only within the machine and supply instructions, then test again with representative material. Do not continue a long run after the first visible defect. Early correction protects the remaining print and prevents a small setup issue from becoming a costly batch of unusable output.

Pressure-sensitive film is useful for heat-sensitive prints, photographs, vinyl, digital output, and materials that may distort under heated rollers. Thermal film requires heat activation and must be used only when both the machine and printed material support it. Confirm the Xyron machine’s accepted supply type before ordering because a cold-process system may not use ordinary thermal film.
