- Having a personal shredder is essential if you want to protect yourself against identity theft. One machine that can fit the bill is the Fellowes DS-3. Check out its strengths and weaknesses to see if it's right for you:
Features/ Strengths:
- One of the best things about the DS-3 is that it's a cross-cut shredder with a Level 3 security rating. You'll be able to shred paper and credit cards so your private information won't fall into the wrong hands. It will definitely help you ward off identity theft.
- This shredder can handle paper that's up to 9" wide. Ten sheets can be shredded at once which isn't too bad for a machine designed for personal use.
- The DS-3 will start shredding automatically as soon as you place something in the feed opening, so it's pretty easy to use. When it's done shredding, it will stop running so you can save a little bit of power. Also, the motor is thermally protected so you can shred quite a bit and not worry about the machine overheating.
- This device is outfitted with Fellowes' popular SafeSense feature. SafeSense is a technologically advanced safety system that causes the machine to stop running if your hands get too close to the feed opening. This feature helps make the DS-3 extremely safe to use.
- The DS-3 has a 5-gallon waste bin so you won't need to empty it constantly. The bin has a transparent panel so you'll be able to see when it's getting full. When it's time to empty it, just lift up the top of the device and recycle your shreds.
- You'll be able to store this shredder under a desk or table because it's not very big. Its dimensions are 16.5" (height) x 15" (width) x 12" (depth).
- Finally, the DS-3's cutters are covered by a limited 3-year warranty. All of the other parts are backed by a limited 1-year warranty.
Limitations/Weaknesses:
- The 10-sheet shredding capacity might not be workable if you routinely need to shred a lot of thick documents. Also, this machine can't shred multimedia items such as CD's and floppy disks.
- The DS-3 only has one waste bin and one feed basket. As a result, your plastic and paper shreds are going to be mixed. To make recycling a bit easier, you should shred the two materials separately.
- This machine is obviously not meant for heavy-duty shredding in larger offices. However, there are many shredders available for larger workplaces.
Recommendation:
- If you're looking for a shredder for home use, the Fellowes DS-3 is definitely one you should consider. This is really one of the best shredders meant for personal use and it has all the features that Fellowes machines are famous for, such as the great warranty coverage and the inclusion of SafeSense technology. The DS-3 will give you the security you need and it's also small enough to fit just about anywhere. It's not the best choice for large offices but for individual use, it's ideal.
