Round Rings vs D-Rings
Binder rings are sized by the diameter of the ring itself, not the width of the binder spine, which is a common point of confusion. A "one inch binder" has rings with a one inch inside diameter. Round rings, also called O-rings, are the traditional circular shape and tend to be more compact, but because pages rest on a curve rather than a flat edge, they hold fewer sheets and can be harder to turn when the binder is full. D-rings have one straight edge mounted to the back cover, letting pages lie flatter and hold roughly 25% more capacity than a round ring of the same nominal size.

Capacities are based on standard 20 lb bond paper. Tab dividers, plastic sleeves, and heavier paper all reduce the effective sheet count, so a binder packed with tabbed sections will hold noticeably fewer pages than the raw capacity chart suggests.
