Akiles iCoil 41 Coil Binding Machine Review
Akiles is a known quantity in the binding world and they recently put out a group of exciting new products. This group includes the Akiles iCoil 41, a coil binding machine. Here’s an in-depth look at its strengths and weaknesses so you can determine if it’s right for you.
Strengths:
- The iCoil 41 can bind documents that contain more than 400 pages depending on how the coil is inserted. This machine is equipped with an electric inserter that can process documents containing a maximum of 190 pages. However, if you insert the coil manually, you’ll be able to produce books containing as many as 440 pages.
- This machine is compatible with 4:1 pitch coils which are available in a rainbow of colors. If you’re not sure which size coil would work best with your document, you can use this device’s coil selector to make the appropriate choice.
- The iCoil 41 has a vertical punching mechanism so gravity will help align your sheets properly. The machine also has a side margin control so you’ll be able to have holes that are evenly centered. These features ensure you’ll get the results you need the first time and won’t need to punch your paper again.
- The iCoil 41’s dies are made out of harden steel so they’re able to handle both delicate and tough materials. The dies can punch through regular 20 lb. bond paper with ease as well as thicker materials such as PVC.
- Using this machine is pretty easy thanks to its intuitive design. It’s also comfortable to use because it has an ergonomically friendly handle.
- This is a very durable coil binding machine that features an all-metal chassis. Best of all, this device is affordable, so it’s a great choice if you’re trying to stick to a budget and still need something that will provide you with a lot of use. Plus, it’s covered by a one-year warranty so you can get it repaired or replaced if you need to.
Weaknesses:
- Although the iCoil 41 has excellent binding capacities, its punching ability could be improved. This machine can only punch up to 15 sheets of paper at a time, which will be inconvenient when you’re trying to bind longer books.
- This device lacks two key features: disengageable dies and an open punching throat. Due to this, you’ll only be able to work with letter-sized documents. That should be okay if you only bind on an occasional basis, but it probably won’t work if you need to bind a variety of documents regularly.
While the Akiles iCoil 41 has a couple of weaknesses (namely its punching capacity), overall this is a pretty impressive coil binding machine that would be great for a variety of different work environments. This device has a very handy electric coil inserter but you can also bind your books by hand, especially if they happen to be long. You’ll find that this machine is easy to use (the ergonomic handle is a big plus) and that its durability can’t be beat. As long as you’re not worried about this device’s couple of weaknesses, you’ll find that the iCoil 41 is what you need to bind your documents with ease.
