GBC Shredmaster GLM1130 Jam Free Micro Cut Paper Shredder Review
In any company, the secure disposal of sensitive material is highly important. An excellent device for this task is the GBC Shredmaster GLM1130. It offers high security combined with heavy duty construction and super quiet operation. This durable machine is designed to stand up to the rigorous, all day shredding needed in large offices. Let’s take a closer look.
Strengths:
- With its automatic on/off function, this shredder is easy to use. Paper is detected in the feed and shred on cue. When you’ve finished, the machine automatically turns itself off. A clear, lighted control panel constantly displays the machine’s status. Two minutes of inactivity activates an energy conserving power save mode to save electricity.
- With Jam Free technology, jams are prevented before they happen. The user is alerted to overfed paper by a glowing red throat and the blades coming to a halt. After the excess paper is removed, the throat turns green and the blades re-start. Auto reverse feeds items back out to the user to unclog the blades if a jam does occur.
- The continuous duty motor is rated for super quiet operation, about 10 decibels less than its closest competitors. Quieter shredding equals less distraction for your employees, increasing productivity.
- A wide ten inch paper entry easily accepts stapled and paperclipped documents up to 11 sheets thick. A separate slot accommodates credit cards and CDs. Items are shred as fast as 19 feet per minute and drop into a spacious 30 gallon container. The waste bin is located in a convenient pull-out drawer, which uses either plastic or recyclable paper bags.
- The cross cutting mechanism creates tiny pieces only 3/32″ by 19/32″ in size, earning a level 4 security rating. This is ideal for all your sensitive internal documents as well as any confidential employee information.
- The blades also have self-cleaning and self-oiling mechanisms. Both keep the blades free of debris and running smoothly, prolonging the life of your machine.
- GBC provides a one year warranty on the cutters. The rest of the device carries a two year warranty, which includes on-site service.
Weaknesses:
- This is a heavy machine and will be bulky and awkward to move, short of storing it on wheels. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have casters. We suggest using a dolly to help you move it around if needed.
- Although the separate openings are convenient, it would be nice if there were differentiated waste compartments as well. While this may not be an issue for many people, there are shredders on the market that do offer segregated waste for easier recycling.
- The capacities seen on this machine- 11 sheets shred at 19 feet per minute- are not ideal for extremely high volumes. However, they are normal for high security shredders. If you need faster shredding with only medium security, we recommend the GLX2030.
Clearly from the many strengths, the GBC Shredmaster GLM1130 is an ideal system for a large office needing to destroy secure material. Private information stays safe in the minute particles efficiently created by the blades. We would highly recommend this excellent device as your next central office shredder.
