Prima Paperlock Eco-Comb Binding Machine Review
Plastic comb binding is a convenient, easy way to put together professional-looking documents. However, it is not exactly known as the most environmentally friendly binding method. If you like the look of plastic combs but still want to take care of Mother Earth, you really must look at the brand new Prima PaperLock Eco-Comb binding machine. This machine uses the same 19-hole pattern found in comb-bound documents but it is very good for the environment, thanks to fully recyclable binding spines. Here are the advantages – and disadvantages – of using this product.
Advantages:
- As the name suggests, this product offers a very green way of binding your documents. Each comb is made from paper and adhesive that is 100% recyclable, so when you are done with your booklet, you can simply recycle the whole thing. You certainly can’t do that with a document bound with plastic combs or wire.
- Since this machine doesn’t have a built-in punch, you must use it in conjunction with your existing plastic comb binding machine. This gives you two great ways of binding your reports, proposals, and other documents.
- This binding method is pretty versatile and you can bind documents that contain as few as 4 pages or as many as 200.
- The supplies needed are very cost-effective because they only come in three sizes: small, medium, and large. This eliminates the need to have a lot of different combs on hand and it also makes it easier to select the right sized comb for your booklet. The spines are available in a wonderful variety of colors, making it easy to select the right one for your document.
- Booklets that are bound with Eco-Combs can lay lie flat when opened which makes your document much easier to read and/or photocopy. Since the binding spines aren’t bulky, it’s very easy to stack and mail booklets bound with them. You’ll not save space on your bookshelf, you can save money on postage, as well.
- These spines provide one of the most secure binding methods around. Once your document is bound with one of these supplies, it cannot be edited, so this is the method to use if you are confident your booklet won’t need to be amended later on. (This is a great option to use if you will be binding financial and legal documents.) Plus, the spines are extremely strong and will be able to withstand a lot of use.
- This machine has a one-year warranty just in case you encounter problems.
Disadvantages:
- As mentioned above, you must use this machine alongside a traditional machine, so if you don’t already have one, you’ll wind up having to purchase two machines. It really would have been nice if Prima had included a punch with this product.
- You can only bind documents that are 11 inches long with this machine. It is not designed for use with shorter or longer documents. This system is also not capable of binding documents with more than about 200 sheets. You will have to stick with plastic combs for that.
- Although these spines are strong, they will show signs of age over time such as cracking. The pages might also become a bit skewed.
- The handle is located on the right side of the machine, so southpaws might find operating the machine a bit challenging. A U-shaped handle would have been a better choice.
Overall, the Prima PaperLock Eco-Comb binding machine is a great product to get if you already have a comb binding machine and want to start binding your booklets in an eco-friendly way. Plus, it offers you a lot of security and a professional look. So be sure to consider getting one of these machines for your office today!
