because of the higher sheet capacity and flat clinch mechanism of the Optima 70, it requires larger staples than the standard 1/4 inch size.

The 70 Swingline® Optima® Desk Stapler should be used with Swingline® Optima® High Capacity Staples for best performance. These staples have a slightly longer leg length than standard staples, which allows a higher stapling sheet capacity,

The reason for the staples not curving properly is because the bottom plate is not freely floating up which puts the metal pieces down so the staples curve.

If you have not checked for spare staples that may be in the way of pushing the magazine back in, please do so.

Once you press the button on the bag of the stapler you should see the magazine pop out from the front. You have have to gently pull the magazine out in order to reload the staples.

Sometimes the staples begin to get bent out of shape when stapling is due to the wrong size staples being inserted into the stapler.

Figured it out. the staple caused the magazine to stick in the "staple" position. There is a slot on either side of the magazine.

Fixed it. The swing arms/guides were no longer in the slots which didn't allow the head to come down all the way.
