Wedgewood Blue Spiral Binding Coils

Pitch must match the hole pattern produced by the binding machine. A 4:1 punched document requires a 4:1 coil, and a different pitch will not thread correctly through the holes. Length should match the bound edge, with a small amount left at both ends for trimming and crimping. Standard letter documents normally use a different coil length from half size, legal, landscape, or oversized work. The available coil binding machines should be identified by their punch pitch before supplies are ordered. Count the holes on a successfully punched sample when the machine label or manual is unavailable. Keeping that sample beside the equipment helps staff confirm pitch, document orientation, and required coil length before production begins.

Crimping cuts the excess coil and bends each end inward so the spine cannot work its way out as the document is opened and closed. Leaving the ends straight can create sharp tips, snag nearby sheets, and allow the coil to unwind gradually from the punched holes. Both ends should be finished after insertion, with the bent tip directed toward the document. Tools within spiral coil accessories are intended to make this finishing step more consistent. Test the completed bind by turning the front, middle, and back sheets through a full rotation. The coil should remain centered, the ends should not catch, and every sheet should move without resistance or visible stress around the holes.

Covers should be selected for the handling conditions, appearance, and punch compatibility of the finished document. Clear fronts keep the title sheet visible, cardstock provides a traditional printed finish, and poly covers offer greater resistance to moisture and repeated handling. Both covers must use the same pitch and hole alignment as the interior sheets. Their thickness also contributes to the total document measurement used for coil sizing. Bright white, dark blue, gray, or clear covers can work well with Wedgewood Blue, but the final choice should support the document’s branding and use rather than color alone. Punch a full sample with the actual cover material because heavy or flexible covers may feed differently from ordinary paper and may require smaller punching batches.

Use longer coil lengths when several standard spines will be cut from one piece, when unusual document sizes are produced, or when production staff need control over the final length. Pre-cut coils are more convenient for repeat jobs because they reduce measuring, cutting, and leftover material. The better option depends on document variety, daily volume, available cutting tools, and the consistency required between operators. Long coils should be stored straight and protected from heat or pressure that could distort the spiral. Before processing a large run, cut one piece, insert it through the punched sample, leave enough material for both crimps, and record the final length. That setup note makes later batches faster and helps reduce waste from pieces cut too short.
