Coil length should cover the full binding edge with enough extra length for crimping. Common coil lengths include 12" for letter-size documents and longer options such as 15", 18", and 36" for larger or custom jobs. Shorter 9" lengths can be useful for smaller formats. If the coil is too short, it will not reach the full punched edge. If it is much too long, operators will trim more waste after insertion. For non-standard sizes, measure the binding edge and check that the punch pattern, coil pitch, and coil length all match. A custom size should be tested before a full production run.

White coils give documents a clean, bright, and neutral spine. They work well with white covers, light designs, training materials, classroom workbooks, proposals, and reports where a dark spine would feel too heavy. Color does not affect pitch, length, or diameter, so the technical fit must still be checked first. White can also help a document feel more polished when paired with clear or frost covers. For heavy-use documents, coil binding is useful because sheets turn smoothly and can fold back during use.
