Choose the finish according to the design, paper colour, viewing conditions, and level of contrast required. Metallic foil produces a reflective result and is commonly used for logos, certificates, invitations, packaging accents, and presentation materials. Pigment and satin matte finishes provide colour with less reflection, while holographic and glitter effects create a more decorative appearance. A foil that looks strong on white paper may have less contrast on dark, textured, or heavily printed stock. Request or produce samples on the actual paper before committing to a large run. Also consider whether small text and fine lines need a clean, restrained finish rather than a highly patterned foil that may reduce readability.

Select a roll width that covers the printed design while leaving enough material for accurate positioning. A roll that is much wider than the artwork creates unnecessary waste, while a roll that is too narrow may leave parts of the toner uncovered. Roll length should reflect the number of sheets, design area, setup waste, and expected reprints. Shorter rolls are practical for tests and small batches, while longer rolls are better for repeated production. The available laminating foil sizes allow the width and length to be matched to the machine and job. Confirm the roll core and maximum supported width when the foil will be used with dedicated fusing equipment.

Heat, pressure, feed speed, toner density, paper surface, and carrier handling all affect transfer quality. Insufficient heat or an excessively fast feed can leave patchy areas, while too much heat may curl the sheet, distort some stocks, or transfer foil where it is not wanted. Smooth coated and uncoated papers can behave differently, so one setting may not suit every job. Allow the equipment to reach a stable temperature and run a sample containing both solid areas and fine detail. Let the sheet cool before removing the foil unless the material instructions specify another method. Record successful settings for each combination of paper, printer, foil, and machine to make later batches more consistent.

Confirm that the artwork will be printed with toner and that the machine can provide the heat, pressure, feed width, and speed needed for foil transfer. Also verify the supported sheet thickness, maximum roll or foil width, carrier requirements, and minimum operating temperature. A basic office laminator may not provide enough control for every foil or paper type. Machines made for foiling generally allow more reliable adjustment.
