If it is too large, the document can feel loose. Make one complete sample and inspect the loop shape, turning action, and seam before producing the full run.

The workflow requires a punch that creates the correct 3:1 hole pattern and a closer that compresses the wire to its final shape. Some wire binding machines combine both functions, while modular systems use separate punching and closing units. Confirm the punching width, disengageable pin options, and capacity for heavy covers if the documents vary in size. The closer should have a reliable adjustment for the exact wire diameter because an incorrect setting can leave the seam open or flatten the loops. Punch covers separately when their thickness approaches the machine limit. A test document should show even holes, round closed loops, and smooth sheet movement before a larger production run begins.

The closing seam is usually hidden between the back cover and the final sheet. To achieve this, assemble the document with the back cover placed on top of the front cover before inserting the wire. After the wire is closed, turn the back cover around the spine into its normal position. This places the seam inside the document rather than along the exposed back edge. The method improves appearance and helps protect the closure during handling. Keep the sheets aligned while loading the wire so every loop passes through the matching hole. Before turning the cover, inspect the closure across the full binding edge. Uneven gaps or flattened loops indicate that the closer setting or document position needs adjustment.

A closer must compress the wire evenly to the final diameter without leaving the seam open or crushing the loops. Dedicated wire closers provide adjustable settings for different wire sizes and production needs. Set the machine according to the wire diameter, then close a sample before processing the full document. The finished loops should be round, consistent, and close enough that sheets cannot escape. An under-closed wire leaves a visible gap, while excessive pressure can flatten the spine and restrict turning. Keep the document centered during closing so both ends receive equal pressure. When changing wire sizes, reset and test the closer rather than relying on the previous setting.
