A plain edge may be adequate for short term handouts or files that are rarely handled, while reinforced binding edge copier tabs provide extra support for manuals, procedures, and reference materials. Reinforcement does not replace the need for the correct hole pattern or adequate spine capacity. Include the tabs when measuring the finished document because heavier stock and reinforced edges add bulk. Also confirm that the tabs extend far enough to remain visible beyond any covers or protector sleeves used in the final assembly.

Choose the weight by balancing durability with the feeding limits of the printer or copier. Ninety pound stock is sturdy and often easier for office equipment to handle. One hundred ten pound stock feels more substantial and can resist bending better, but it may require a bypass or multipurpose tray. Heavy tab stock can also reduce the number of sheets that feed reliably in one batch. Confirm the supported media range in the equipment manual and use the correct paper type setting. Duplex printing may not be supported for every heavy stock. Before ordering a large quantity, run a small test that includes the real artwork, correct orientation, and final collation. The best choice is the lightest stock that provides the durability and appearance required without causing feeding or toner adhesion problems.

Prepunched tabs save a production step and provide consistent hole placement, but the pattern must match the final binding or filing system exactly. Prepunched copier tabs make sense when the same hole pattern is used repeatedly and the printer can feed the tabs in the correct orientation. Unpunched tabs offer more flexibility when different binding methods are used or when punching must align with other custom materials. Consider whether the document uses rings, combs, coil, wire, or another system, then confirm the number, shape, and spacing of the holes. Print and assemble one complete sample before committing to a production run. This verifies feed direction, label placement, tab sequence, and hole alignment at the same time.
