Facemount Mounting Adhesives

Both surfaces should be clean, smooth, dry, and suitable for the adhesive. Dust, fingerprints, surface coatings, scratches, or moisture can remain visible after mounting because the finished display is viewed through the transparent substrate. The print should be fully cured before application, especially when solvent, latex, or other production inks are involved. Acrylic and glass can behave differently during handling and installation, so the adhesive instructions should identify acceptable substrates. Test a small sample using the actual print, adhesive, and clear material whenever the combination is unfamiliar. This helps reveal clarity issues, silvering, bubbles, adhesive reactions, or changes in image appearance before a full-size graphic is produced.

A pressure-sensitive roll laminator is generally the most reliable method for applying wide adhesive film evenly because it provides steady pressure across the graphic. Hand application may be possible for small samples, but larger pieces are more likely to develop bubbles, creases, uneven contact, or alignment problems. The laminator must support the adhesive width, roll core, film thickness, and required mounting pressure. Suitable pressure-sensitive mounting adhesive rolls are made for room-temperature application, but the equipment and media still need to be compatible. Good roller condition, correct tension, careful alignment, and a clean work area all contribute to a clear result.

Prepare the print and substrate in a clean area and remove dust before the materials enter the rollers. Feed the graphic straight and maintain even pressure so air is pushed out rather than trapped between layers. Silvering can occur when very small air pockets remain visible in the adhesive, particularly over dark image areas. Excessive speed, poor roller pressure, textured media, contamination, and unsuitable adhesive combinations can all contribute to the problem. Allow printed media to cure fully and follow any recommended dwell time before judging the final clarity. For unfamiliar materials, produce a small test and view it under the same lighting conditions planned for the finished display.

A clean mounting workflow may require cutting tools, lint-free cleaning materials, application aids, release liners, substrate-handling tools, and equipment for trimming the finished display. The exact supplies depend on whether the graphic is being mounted to acrylic, glass, or another transparent material and whether the edges will remain exposed. The available mounting accessories can support handling and finishing, but each tool should suit the materials and production method being used. Keep the work surface clean and inspect the graphic before lamination because debris trapped during face mounting is difficult to correct afterward. Plan the cutting and finishing sequence before removing release liners.
