Choose a jaw that is slightly longer than the widest bag opening regularly sealed. Extra clearance makes it easier to position the material flat without allowing the edges to extend beyond the heating element. A very long jaw is not automatically better because it requires more floor space and may be less convenient for small packages. Consider the dimensions of the worktable and the way filled bags will be supported. If the package has gussets or several layers at the seam, confirm that the machine can handle the resulting thickness. The chosen jaw should cover normal production needs without forcing folds or diagonal positioning.

Thicker film, gusseted bags, and multilayer seams require more sealing capacity than a single layer of light polyethylene. The machine’s stated material limit should be considered across all layers placed between the jaws. Seal width influences strength, appearance, and resistance to opening. A wider seal can provide more bonding area, but it must still be compatible with the film. When sourcing sealer bags, confirm the material structure and total seam thickness rather than relying only on bag dimensions. Testing the actual bag is the best way to confirm the timer setting and seam quality.

The timer may be too low, the material may be unsuitable, or the heating element may not be producing even heat. Contamination, wrinkles, and multiple uneven layers can also leave weak points. After the heating cycle, some materials need a brief cooling period while the jaws remain closed so the seam can set. Raising the timer too far can burn or cut through the film, so adjustments should be gradual. Inspect the element, PTFE cover, and sealing surface for wear or residue. Use the same filled or layered package during testing because an empty single-layer sample may not represent the final seam.

Heating elements and PTFE covers are common wear parts on impulse sealers. Their condition directly affects heat distribution and prevents the film from sticking to the sealing bar. Depending on the model, microswitches, timers, fuses, silicone rubber, and pedal components may also need attention over time. Disconnect the machine before inspecting or replacing parts, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for element tension and alignment. Keeping a compatible spare kit reduces interruptions when a wear item fails.
