Hot laminating uses heat to activate adhesive on thermal pouches or film. It is common for office documents, classroom materials, signs, menus, and everyday protection. Cold laminating uses pressure-sensitive adhesive and bonds without heat. It is better for heat-sensitive prints, some inkjet materials, pressure-sensitive graphics, labels, and wide-format display work that could curl or distort under heat. Some machines support hot and cold use, but many are limited to one method. Do not assume a hot laminator can run pressure-sensitive film or that a cold machine can use thermal pouches. Check the machine type before choosing laminating supplies.

Choose thickness based on the feel and durability needed after laminating. Thinner film, such as 2 or 3 mil, adds protection while keeping the piece flexible. A 5 mil pouch or film gives a more noticeable, semi-rigid feel and is common for signs, reference sheets, and handled documents. A 10 mil option creates a much stiffer result for items like cards, badges, and frequently handled pieces, but the laminator must be rated for that thickness. Running thick material through an under-rated machine can cause poor bonding or jams.

Buy supplies that match the machine type and the first jobs you plan to run. For pouch machines, choose pouches in the right size and thickness. You may also need carriers, trimmers, cleaning supplies, mounting boards, or foil depending on the workflow. Do not buy supplies by project name alone. Check sheet size, finished size, film thickness, hot or cold compatibility, and machine width. A small test batch is useful before stocking large quantities, especially when laminating photos, graphics, or customer-facing materials.

Use pressure-sensitive film when the material should not be exposed to heat or when the workflow is built around cold roll lamination. It is useful for some inkjet prints, pressure-sensitive graphics, labels, posters, and wide-format displays. It can also be the right choice when fast setup is important because cold machines do not need warm-up time. Thermal film is usually better for standard office and school documents when the material can safely handle heat. If the job involves heat-sensitive prints or writable display surfaces, compare pressure-sensitive laminating films with thermal pouches or roll film before choosing the supply.
