Sheet-count estimates are only a guide because paper weight and cover thickness change the actual stack depth. Build one representative document, measure it, and test the chosen diameter before ordering enough material for a full production run.

Coil length should follow the punched binding edge. A common letter-size document bound along the 11-inch edge usually uses a coil long enough to extend slightly beyond the first and last holes before trimming. Legal and tabloid formats require longer material when the longer edge is being bound. Custom sizes may be handled with longer coil that is cut to fit, provided the pitch and diameter remain correct. A suitable coil binding machine should also support the chosen sheet length, punch pattern, and document thickness. Always leave enough material at both ends for secure crimping after insertion. A short trial run also confirms that the selected length feeds smoothly through every punched hole without binding.

Cutting and crimping forms inward-facing ends that help stop the coil from unwinding through the punched holes during use. Simply trimming the coil straight can leave a sharp end and may allow the binding to work loose as the document is opened repeatedly. Use proper coil crimping pliers or suitable finishing equipment, and orient the tool correctly so the end bends toward the document. Finish both ends after the coil is fully inserted and centered. Inspect the result for sharp points, excessive overhang, or a crimp that catches the first or last sheet. Good end finishing is especially important for manuals and reference documents that will be folded back or handled frequently.

A complete setup normally includes a punch with the correct pitch, a way to insert the coil, and a tool that cuts and crimps both ends. Manual insertion can work for occasional thin documents, while an electric roller can reduce effort during frequent production or when longer coils are used. The punch must support the cover material as well as the internal sheets, and thicker covers may need to be punched separately. For consistent finishing, crimpers and coil binding machines provide options for securing the coil after insertion. Plan the process around the real document sizes and monthly volume rather than choosing equipment only from the highest stated capacity.
