Lilac Spiral Binding Coils

The coil pitch must match the hole pattern produced by the punching equipment. Pitch refers to the number of holes per inch along the binding edge. A 4:1 pattern has four holes per inch, while a 3.2:1 pattern has fewer, more widely spaced holes. Coils made for one pitch should not be forced through a different punch pattern because insertion will be difficult and the finished document may not turn properly. Confirm the pitch marked on the punch die, machine label, or existing supplies before ordering. Also confirm whether the holes are round or oval and whether the document was punched for spiral coil rather than another binding style. This is especially important when supplies are being ordered for equipment already in use.

Choose a coil that is slightly longer than the document’s punched binding edge. The extra length allows the coil to pass through every hole before both ends are trimmed and crimped. Standard letter-size documents often use a common precut length, while short-edge, horizontal-format, oversize, or custom projects may need another length. Do not select length from paper size alone; measure the actual punched edge because orientation changes the required coil length. After insertion, remove the excess without cutting too close to the first or last hole. Properly formed end crimps keep the coil from backing out during use. Suitable spiral coil accessories can help with insertion, trimming, and crimping when jobs vary in size.

Lilac can be used with many cover colours, but the best choice depends on the contrast and presentation required for the finished document. A close colour match creates a coordinated appearance, while a contrasting cover makes the binding more visible. Before ordering a large quantity, place a sample coil beside the front and back covers under the lighting where the document will normally be viewed. Printed artwork, logos, tabs, and spine-side graphics can also affect how the colour appears. For client work or repeat jobs, record the selected coil colour with the cover stock and print specifications so later runs remain consistent. Colour should be chosen after diameter and pitch, since appearance will not correct a coil that does not fit the document or punch pattern.

A complete spiral coil workflow requires a punch with the correct pitch, a method for inserting the coil, and a way to trim and crimp both ends. Low-volume work can often be completed with manual insertion, while longer runs may benefit from an electric roller inserter. The punch must support the paper size, binding edge, and document thickness used in the job. Some machines punch only, while others combine punching and insertion functions. Before selecting from coil binding machines, confirm the pitch, punching capacity, disengageable die needs, and whether nonstandard sheet sizes will be used. Coil crimpers are still needed after insertion because cutting alone leaves an open end that can unwind from the document.
