Technical fit must be settled first, because an attractive spine cannot correct a mismatch between the coil and the punched document.

Longer coils are useful when documents vary in binding-edge length, when custom formats are produced, or when one coil must be cut to suit several finished sizes. Pre-cut coils can reduce trimming time for repeat letter, legal, or other standard jobs. A powered coil inserter may improve control and speed when longer coils are used frequently, provided the roller system supports the chosen diameter. Plan for accurate cutting and enough extra length to form secure crimps at both ends. Excessive overhang wastes material and slows finishing, while a coil cut too short may unwind or leave the last holes unsupported. Test the complete inserting and trimming sequence before choosing long coils for routine production.

Colour does not determine pitch, diameter, capacity, or machine compatibility. Reflex Blue is a visual choice that can support branding, subject coding, department identification, or coordination with covers and printed artwork. The technical specification must still match the punched document and binding equipment. Darker blue-violet tones may look different beside clear, white, black, or coloured covers, so place the coil against the finished materials before ordering in volume. Keep colour codes consistent across repeated manuals or reports so users can recognise document groups quickly. When replacing supplies, confirm both the colour name and the full coil specification, since standard blue, navy, and Reflex Blue may appear similar in purchasing records but create noticeably different finished results.

After insertion, both coil ends should be cut and crimped so they turn inward and resist spinning out of the punched holes. Ordinary scissors may trim the plastic but do not create the inward bend needed for a secure finish. Suitable coil crimpers combine cutting and crimping for manual or higher-volume workflows. Leave enough coil beyond the first and last holes for the tool to form a clean bend without excessive sharp plastic. Inspect both ends after finishing and turn several sheets to confirm that the coil remains centred. Consistent crimp direction, tool position, and overhang length help produce safer, neater documents and reduce returns caused by coils working loose during handling.
