Assemble the complete printed block, including title sheets, photographs, dividers, and any heavier inserts, then measure the compressed thickness at the binding edge. Select a cover with a spine that holds the material without forcing it or leaving excessive space. A spine that is too tight may prevent proper adhesive contact and can cause loose sheets. One that is too wide can produce a weak, uneven appearance. Paper weight matters because coated or heavy stock creates a thicker book than the same number of standard sheets. Produce one complete sample before ordering the full cover quantity. The sample should be bound, cooled, opened several times, and inspected at the first and last sheets to confirm secure adhesion.

Hard covers suit yearbooks that need a traditional book feel, stronger outer protection, and a more substantial presentation. Soft thermal covers are lighter, easier to store, and may be practical for smaller budgets or short-term publications. Hardcover binding machines may use different cover systems, crimping steps, or case-making methods, so the cover decision should come before equipment is purchased. Consider how the finished books will be transported, stored, and handled over time. Custom artwork, foil titles, windows, and printed wraps also affect lead time and cost. A plain cover with an inserted title sheet may be easier to produce internally when the schedule is tight or the final quantity may change.

A crimper is useful when the selected hardcover system requires pressure along the warm spine to improve contact as the adhesive sets. The step should follow the equipment and cover instructions rather than being added automatically to every thermal workflow. Cooling is always important because moving or opening the book before the adhesive has set can disturb sheet alignment and weaken the bind. Place the finished book upright or in the specified cooling position and allow the full recommended setting time. For repeated production, create a clearly marked area for hot books, cooling books, and completed books. This prevents finished items from being handled too early and reduces confusion when several batches are moving through the process at once.

Coated or glossy stock can be used only when the adhesive system and machine are suitable for that material. Smooth coatings may reduce adhesion if the glue cannot grip the sheet edge properly, especially when the printed block is not squared or prepared correctly. The available thermal binding covers come in different spine widths and constructions, so cover choice must follow the measured book thickness and machine instructions. Run a sample using the actual paper, print process, cover, and finishing steps. After cooling, fan the sheets gently and inspect the center as well as both ends of the spine. A successful sample is more reliable than assuming standard settings will work with every glossy or coated stock.
