Dahle Stack Cutters are manually operated but make easy cutting of up to 700 sheets of paper at a time. Safety shields can be found on either side of the cutting blade and will not allow the blade to move while they are in the up position. Once the shields are in place, you have the ability to cut cleanly though 700 sheets of paper with very little effort. This clean, burr free cut through such a large stack of paper is made possible through a ground Solingen Steel blade and a paper clamp that places even pressure across the entire cutting surface. The two larger machines offer a self-locking spindle driven backstop for minute adjustments to your cutting measurements. These cutters can be mounted on any secure table surface although the optional floor stands are recommended for proper cutting height and leverage.

The Dahle 848 Heavy-Duty Stack Cutter is a device that can cut literally hundreds of sheets of paper at once. If that sounds intriguing to you, let's check out its strengths - and weaknesses.

Strengths:

The 848 is a machine that's capable of cutting up to 700 sheets of paper at a time. A typical ream of paper contains 500 sheets, so you'll be able to cut almost 1.5 reams at once. This makes the 848 the perfect device to use if you need to quickly cut hundreds of sheets.
In addition to paper, this device can slice through cardstock. However, since cardstock is a thicker material, you won't be able to cut as much of it at a time.
Ground Solingen steel seems to be Dahle's metal of choice when it comes to making blades and with the 848, they've used it yet again. Solingen steel is a very durable metal and it makes very sharp blades. Since this material has been used, you can be confident that this is a high-quality product.
Using a stack cutter can be dangerous if the device isn't equipped with adequate safety features. Luckily, the 848 has built-in safety covers that will keep your hands far away from the cutting area. Also, the blade will not move when the covers aren't engaged which helps make the process even safer.
Whenever you use the 848 you can expect an even cut because the device has an manual clamp. The clamp will securely hold your paper so that it doesn't fan. There's also a scale bar that can help you accurately measure your sheets before cutting them. (The scale bar has metric and standard measurements.) This cutter also has a self-locking backstop so you can make adjustments as necessary.

Weaknesses:

The 848 measures 32" x 27.5", so it's going to take up a lot of room. There is a stand available for it, however it must be purchased separately. It would be really nice if the cutter came with the stand instead of having to buy it separately.
Both the stand and the stack cutter are the same shade of bright blue, a color that might not look good in some environments.

Overall, the Dahle 848 Heavy-Duty Stack Cutter would be an excellent choice if you need a device with which to quickly cut hundreds of sheets of paper. This machine handles a lot of paper (and cardstock with ease), which will enable you to get the job done in very little time. The safety shields make this cutter really safe to use while the clamp, backstop, and Soligen steel blade make it easy to get the cut you need. In fact, this cutter is just about perfect, save for the fact that the stand is sold separately. So if you're in need of a stack cutter, the 848 is well worth a look.
