A 40mm coil is intended for a thick document, but the usable sheet count changes with paper weight, coatings, tabs, and cover material. The spine should be slightly larger than the compressed stack so the sheets turn freely without excessive movement. The selected equipment must support the correct punch pattern and the physical size of the document. Produce one full sample before binding a large run. If the stack presses tightly against the coil after insertion, move to a larger diameter instead of forcing the document closed or placing strain on the punched holes.
Large diameter coils need more support during insertion because the document is heavier and the coil has a wider curve. Diameter alone does not identify pitch, so a 40mm coil should never be ordered from size without confirming the hole spacing. Count the holes across a known sheet, measure the center spacing on a punched sample, or use the punch specification. The spiral coil supplies by pitch categories separate compatible formats, but the machine specification remains the final reference. A mismatch cannot be corrected by stretching or compressing the coil because the turns will not align with the holes. Keep a labeled sample near the binding station when several punch systems are used in the same workplace.
