Confirm that the grommet material is suitable for the intended environment rather than assuming every decorative finish provides the same protection. It is also useful to test the finish against the material because metal edges can be more noticeable on light fabrics or thin films. Store unused grommets dry to prevent surface contamination.

A complete setup normally requires the correct press, matched setting die, suitable grommet and washer, accurate position marks, and a work surface that supports the material without folding it. Some jobs also need a hole-cutting die or separate punch. The operator should confirm throat depth when grommets must be installed far from an edge.
