Not every printer or copier is designed to feed tab stock reliably. Tab sheets are heavier than standard paper and have an extended edge that affects how they move through the equipment. Confirm that the machine supports tab printing, the selected sheet weight, and the required orientation. Use the correct tray, media setting, and feed direction recommended by the equipment manufacturer. A small test run can reveal skewing, jamming, toner adhesion problems, or an incorrect sequence before the complete job is produced. Straight-collated copier tabs are suitable only when their sequence matches the machine’s feed direction and output arrangement.

Plain paper tabs provide a clean appearance and may be suitable for documents with limited handling. Mylar-coated tabs reinforce the extended tab area, helping it resist bending, tearing, and repeated contact. This can be helpful for training manuals, procedural documents, directories, and reference materials that are used regularly. The coating may cover only the tab extension, allowing the main sheet to pass through suitable printing equipment. Consider the expected handling, required lifespan, printing method, and budget. Also confirm that the coating colour and finish suit the document design. Reinforcement may be worthwhile when the document will be opened often or stored in a busy shared environment.

Prepunched tabs are useful when the finished sheets will be placed directly into a compatible binder or binding system. They reduce the need for punching after printing and can improve consistency across repeated jobs. Before ordering, confirm the hole pattern, spacing, sheet orientation, and binding edge. Standard three-hole punching is common for ring binders, but other patterns may be required for specialised systems. The holes must also align with the main sheets used in the document. When several finishing methods are used, unpunched tabs may provide more flexibility. Prepunched copier tabs should be selected after the document format and binding method have been confirmed.
