Choose a combination machine when the printed piece needs both a clean fold and a tear-off section. Scoring compresses the paper so it folds neatly, especially on heavier or coated stock. Perforating creates the tear line. Jobs such as tickets, response cards, folded coupons, mailers, and forms may need both processes in one workflow. A machine that handles perforating and scoring can reduce setup time and keep alignment more consistent than moving sheets between separate tools. If fold quality is a major concern, compare scoring and creasing machines before choosing. The best setup depends on stock weight, grain direction, job volume, and operator skill.

Teeth-per-inch, often shown as TPI, describes how many cuts appear along each inch of the perforation line. A lower TPI creates a more open perforation that usually tears more easily. A higher TPI or microperf creates a finer, cleaner-looking line that may be better for polished print pieces. The right choice depends on whether easy removal or neat appearance matters more. Tickets, coupons, cards, and forms may need different perforation styles. Some machines support multiple perf wheels or microperf options, which gives more control across job types. Do not choose TPI by guesswork. Test the stock, ink coverage, and tear direction when possible. A perforation that works on light paper may behave differently on cover stock.

Check the minimum and maximum sheet size, stock weight range, feed style, and whether the machine supports the specific paper used in your job. Some perforating machines handle small tickets and postcards, while others support larger sheets used in production environments. Lightweight forms, coated sheets, cover stock, and multi-part forms can feed differently and may need different settings. If the machine also creases or scores, confirm the stock range for each function, not just perforating. Buyers should also plan for image placement, registration, and safe margins around the perf line. For jobs that include cutting, folding, or trimming after perforating, review paper handling needs in the same workflow.

Use the correct perforation style for the stock and job, then control feeding, guides, registration, and setup. Rough tears can come from the wrong TPI, dull perf wheels, paper grain issues, or stock that is too heavy for the setting. Misalignment often comes from inconsistent feeding or poor guide placement. Run a few test sheets before the full job and tear them the same way the customer will use them. If the piece will be mailed, folded, or handled many times, test after those steps too. Keep spare perforating wheels or maintenance parts available for production work. Clean, predictable tearing depends on both machine choice and the setup routine.
