Frequently Asked Questions

Choose a cutting length based on the widest material you routinely process, then allow enough additional room for positioning and alignment. Buying a cutter that only matches the exact finished width may limit future jobs or make edge trimming awkward. Consider full sheet and roll dimensions for foam board, corrugated plastic, cardboard, banner material, fabric, acrylic, and other approved substrates. The worktable must also support the material along its full length so sheets do not bend or pull away from the cutting line. Larger substrate cutters may suit facilities handling thicker boards, greater widths, or more specialised production requirements. Measure the room, table, loading path, and longest expected material before selecting a size, especially when the cutter will remain permanently mounted.

Material capability depends on the cutter model, blade holder, blade type, and permitted cutting thickness. A system suited to foam board and cardboard may require a different blade for fabric, acrylic scoring, corrugated plastic, or banner material. Never assume a material is acceptable simply because it fits beneath the cutting head. Confirm the manufacturer’s approved substrates and maximum thickness for the exact configuration being purchased. Test unfamiliar material before committing a full printed piece because surface coatings, density, grain, and internal structure may change the result. The supporting table must remain flat and free of debris so the material does not shift. For mixed production, list the materials used most often and make sure the required blades and holders are included or available separately.

Select blades according to the exact cutter family, cutting head, and material. Utility blades, textile wheels, scoring blades, and other inserts serve different purposes and may not be interchangeable between models. The available replacement blades for substrate cutters should be matched by machine and application rather than appearance. A facility that depends on the cutter for daily work may benefit from keeping approved spare blades in labelled protective storage. Estimate replacement quantity using production volume and the abrasiveness of the materials being cut. Never force a worn blade through thicker stock because this can reduce cut quality and control. Record which blade is used for each material so future operators do not rely on trial and error.

A portable or movable rail can suit changing work areas and occasional cutting, provided it can be positioned securely and fully support the material. An integrated cutter offers a fixed alignment point and may be more practical for repeated production where consistency matters. Consider available table space, storage, material length, operator access, and whether the cutter must remain ready throughout the day. A fixed system may reduce setup time, while a portable rail can preserve workspace when cutting is only one part of the operation. Stability is essential in either case. The rail or docking system must not shift during the cut, and the supporting surface should remain flat. Also account for the space needed to load material on both sides of the cutting line.

The workstation should provide a flat supporting surface, enough clearance for the longest material, safe blade storage, measuring tools, cleaning supplies, and organised space for commonly used accessories. A suitable cutting mat may protect areas used for separate hand-cutting or layout work, but it should not interfere with a mounted cutter’s intended cutting path. Keep debris, adhesive fragments, and offcuts away from the rail because they can affect material alignment. Store replacement blades in their original protection and label them by cutter and use. Lighting should make measurement scales and cut lines easy to see. The operator should also be able to support large boards without twisting, leaning across the blade path, or blocking the cutter’s movement.
