Can I Use Wire with My Comb Binding Machine?

Updated on Mar 08, 2026

Over the years, a number of customers have asked whether they can use Wire-o with their plastic comb binding machine. These customers often don’t want to buy a new machine but like the look and feel of twin-loop wire binding. However, the answer isn’t as simple as it seems. They do make wire designed to work with the plastic comb binding hole pattern. With that said, you are going to need a way to close them.

What is Spiral-O Wire?

Spiral-O Wire is a special type of binding wire that has 19 loops and is designed to work with a comb hole punch pattern. Also called wire combs or Ibico Wire, Spiral-O was originally designed for use with older Ibico binders. Several of these machines included a wire closer on the front. This allowed users to accomplish both Wire-O and plastic comb binding with the help of Spiral-O wire.

What Equipment is Needed?

GBC has since phased out the Ibico brand along with their binding machines. GBC’s new comb binders no longer feature wire closers. This presents a problem when trying to use these Spiral-O wires. You need a way to close them to finish your bind. Here are the current options available to accomplish twin-loop wire binding with a comb binding machine.

  • If you have an older Ibico binding machine or can find one for resale, you are in luck. The Spiral-O binding supplies that we carry will work perfectly. You will be able to use both plastic combs and wire immediately.
  • If you have any other comb binding punch, you will need a twin-loop wire closer to replace the one that was featured on the front of Ibico machines. Twin loop wire closers are not cheap. We recommend this option if you are using a heavy-duty, electric, or automatic machine where the price of the closer beats buying a new wire binder.
  • If neither option sounds right for you, there are low-end Wire-O binding machines available to add wire spines to your repertoire without breaking the bank. Plus, you will be able to use a wider variety of twin-loop wire, including cheaper options than Spiral-O. In time, the money saved in supplies could pay for the new punch.
