What are some tips for unjamming my paper folder?
A jammed paper folder always seems to happen in the middle of a deadline run — and the immediate instinct to yank the paper out is usually the wrong move. Pulling jammed paper out forcefully can tear it into pieces that are now harder to remove, can damage the fold rollers, and in some cases can pull a roller out of its bearing. This article covers the right way to clear every type of paper folder jam, how to prevent the most common jam types from recurring, and how to get back to production quickly without damaging the machine.
If your folder is jamming repeatedly rather than occasionally, the problem is almost certainly a maintenance issue rather than an operation issue — see our maintenance guide on how to care for your paper folder to address the root cause after you clear the current jam.
What Is Causing Your Paper Folder to Jam?
Paper folder jams fall into four main categories, each with a different cause and a different clearing technique. Understanding which category your jam is in tells you where to look and what to do before you touch the paper.
Feed jams occur at the input end of the machine, usually because the paper didn't separate cleanly from the stack (double-feed), the paper curled on entry, or the feed rollers lost grip. Fold plate jams occur inside the machine where the paper buckles against the fold plate stop — if the fold plate is set incorrectly, paper can buckle in the wrong place and crumple rather than folding cleanly. Exit jams occur at the output end when folded sheets accumulate faster than they can clear or when a fold is oversized for the exit path. Roller wrap jams — the most serious type — occur when paper wraps around a roller rather than passing through the roller nip, usually due to contaminated rollers, torn paper, or very thin paper at high speeds. For guidance on preventing jams through proper setup, see our article on how to use a paper folder. For guidance on paper scoring that reduces stress on the fold mechanism when using heavy stock, see our article on what you should know about a paper scorer. For selecting the right machine to minimize jams from the start, see our selection guide on what to consider when choosing a paper folding machine.
First rule of unjamming: Power off the machine before reaching into the fold path. Never attempt to clear a jam while the motor is running — roller wrap jams can pull fingers into the mechanism. Power off, wait for motion to stop completely, then clear.
How to Clear Each Jam Type
Clearing a feed jam
A feed jam leaves paper sticking out of or stuck at the entrance to the fold mechanism. Power off the machine. Gently pull the jammed sheet backward (toward the feed tray) rather than forward through the machine — pulling backward removes the paper without pushing it deeper into the mechanism. If the paper won't pull backward cleanly, open any accessible side panels to get a clearer view of the paper path and free the sheet from any catch points before extracting. After clearing, check whether the jam left any torn paper fragments inside the feed path — even a small fragment can cause the next sheet to jam in the same spot. For more on preventing feed jams through correct setup, see our overview on what to consider when choosing a paper folding machine.
Clearing a fold plate jam
A fold plate jam produces a crumpled sheet inside the machine's fold area — visible through the machine's access panels. Power off. Open the fold area access panel (most machines have clearly labeled access points). Gently pull the crumpled sheet out of the fold area — work slowly and avoid tearing it. If the sheet is tightly wedged between the fold plate and a roller, use a thin, flat tool (like a bone folder or the handle of a letter opener — never a sharp blade) to gently separate the paper from the roller surface. After clearing, check the fold plate setting — a fold plate that's set too close to the roller nip is the most common cause of fold plate jams.
Clearing a roller wrap jam
A roller wrap jam is the most serious jam type and requires the most careful handling. The paper has wrapped around a roller one or more times and is now compressed against the roller surface. Power off immediately. Do not attempt to unwrap the paper by pulling in the direction of roller rotation — this can tear the paper into smaller wrapped layers that are harder to remove. Instead, try to unwind the paper in the opposite direction of roller travel, working slowly from the edge of the wrapped paper. If the paper is too tightly compressed to unwind by hand, the machine may need professional service. For roller cleaning to prevent future wrap jams, see our maintenance guide on how to care for your paper folder.
Clearing an exit jam
An exit jam is the easiest type to clear — the paper has simply accumulated faster than it's exiting or the stacker is full. Power off. Remove the accumulated output from the exit stacker. Clear the last sheet from the exit path. Adjust the exit stacker capacity or increase the exit tray size if output is backing up regularly — this is a setup issue, not a mechanical fault. See our step-by-step operating guide at how to use a paper folder for exit stacker configuration guidance.
How to Unjam a Paper Folder — Step-by-Step
Step 1 — Power off immediately
Press the power off button or disconnect power at the first sign of a jam — a stalled sound, a grinding noise, or visible paper stopping mid-feed. Never reach into a running machine.
Step 2 — Identify the jam location
Look at the machine from the outside before opening any panels. Is paper visible at the feed entry? At the fold area access panel? At the exit? Identifying the location tells you which access point to open and which direction to clear.
Step 3 — Open the correct access panel
Most paper folders have side panels, a fold area cover, and sometimes a base panel for accessing the lower feed path. Open only the panel that gives access to the jam location. Refer to the machine's user manual for panel locations if you're uncertain.
Step 4 — Remove the jammed paper gently
Pull the paper in the direction that requires the least force — usually backward toward the feed tray for feed jams, and outward from the fold area for fold plate jams. Work slowly. Torn paper fragments inside the machine cause the next sheet to jam in the same spot.
Step 5 — Check for fragments before closing
After clearing the main jammed sheet, visually inspect the paper path for any torn pieces. Even a corner fragment can cause a recurrence. Use a flashlight if the internal path is hard to see. For related paper handling equipment and workflow guidance, see our overview at what you should know about a paper jogger. For corner rounding finished documents after folding, see our guide on what to look for in a corner rounder.
Step 6 — Identify the root cause and prevent recurrence
Before resuming production, determine why the jam occurred. Was the paper outside the rated weight range? Was the fold plate set incorrectly? Were the feed rollers dirty? Addressing the root cause prevents the same jam from recurring on the next sheet. If jams are happening repeatedly, cleaning the feed and fold rollers is almost always the correct first step.
Quick Reference — Jam Type Diagnostic
| Jam Type | Location | Most Common Cause | Clearing Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed jam | Machine entrance | Double-feed or roller slip | Pull backward toward feed tray |
| Fold plate jam | Inside fold area | Fold plate setting wrong | Remove from fold access panel |
| Roller wrap | Around rollers | Contaminated rollers, thin paper | Unwind opposite to roller direction |
| Exit jam | Machine exit | Stacker full, output backing up | Remove from exit tray, clear path |
Troubleshooting
Paper tears when trying to remove it from the jam
You're pulling in the wrong direction or too hard. Stop immediately, open an access panel to get a better view of the paper path, and change direction. Work from the edge of the paper rather than the center — edges are less likely to tear than the middle of a sheet already under tension.
Machine jams on the same spot with every sheet
A paper fragment from a previous jam is still inside the machine creating a catch point, or the fold plate setting is consistently wrong for your paper size. Clear the machine completely with a flashlight inspection, then re-test the fold plate settings with a single sheet before running a batch.
Roller wrap jam won't clear by hand
The paper is too tightly compressed around the roller to unwind manually. This typically requires a service technician. Don't apply force — forcing a tightly wrapped roller jam can damage the roller bearings permanently.
Machine feeds and then stops without visible paper jam
The exit stacker is full and the machine has a sensor that halts feeding when the stacker reaches capacity. Empty the stacker and resume. If the machine stops even with an empty stacker, a paper sensor inside the machine may be contaminated — clean sensors per the manufacturer's instructions.
Machine jams immediately after loading coated stock
The feed rollers can't grip coated paper reliably — a friction-feed issue. Clean the feed rollers with roller cleaner. If the problem persists after cleaning, the machine may need an air-feed upgrade or the paper type may simply be outside the machine's design range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reach into the folder while it's running to clear a jam?
Never — always power off the machine completely and wait for all motion to stop before reaching into any part of a paper folding machine. Roller wrap jams can pull fingers into the fold mechanism within fractions of a second.
Why does my folder jam on the same paper it folded fine yesterday?
Paper behaves differently in different humidity and temperature conditions. Paper that fed cleanly in a dry environment may curl or stick in humid conditions, causing feed jams. Also check that the paper stack was properly jogged before loading — an unjogged stack causes the same misalignment issues that produce jams.
How do I prevent paper folder jams in the future?
The three most effective preventive measures: clean the feed and fold rollers regularly, use paper within the machine's rated weight range, and jog stacks before feeding. See our maintenance guide at how to care for your paper folder for a complete prevention-focused maintenance schedule.
What should I do if I can't clear the jam myself?
If the jam involves a roller wrap that won't release, paper that's torn into multiple fragments inside the mechanism, or any situation where you can't see the full paper path clearly, stop and call for professional service. Attempting to force a jam that won't clear by hand causes more damage than the original jam.
How long does it take to clear a typical paper folder jam?
Simple feed and exit jams clear in 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Fold plate jams take 2 to 5 minutes with the access panel open. Roller wrap jams can take 10 to 30 minutes or require service. For guidance on setting up and operating the folder to minimize jam frequency, see our operating guide at how to use a paper folder.
