Grommets

Metal grommets provide a traditional finish and are commonly used for banners, signs, fabric, and other applications requiring a firm reinforced opening. Plastic grommets are lightweight and may suit work where corrosion resistance, color, or a non-metallic appearance matters. Material alone does not determine suitability. The fastener profile, barrel length, washer, die, press, and base material must work together. Confirm whether the selected grommet is self-piercing and whether the intended tooling is approved for that construction. For work that will carry tension or remain outdoors, test the completed installation under realistic conditions before producing the full quantity.

Self-piercing grommets are designed to cut through suitable material and set during one pressing operation when used with the proper tooling. Standard grommets may require a hole to be cut before the fastener and washer are joined. A one-step method can reduce production time, but it still depends on material thickness, press force, and correct die selection. Dense, layered, or unusual materials may need testing. The correct grommet press dies must match the press and fastener. Using unrelated tooling can leave an incomplete cut, a distorted fastener, or a weak setting.

The required distance depends on the fastener diameter, flange width, base material, and load placed on the finished opening. Leave enough material beyond the flange so the edge does not tear when tension is applied. A fastener placed too close to an unsupported edge may pull through even when it appears properly set. Templates and alignment guides can keep spacing consistent across repeated work. Corners and high-tension positions may also need added reinforcement. Test the edge distance with the actual mounting hardware and material before completing the full project. The finished arrangement should spread force across the material rather than concentrate it near a narrow edge.

A properly installed grommet should sit evenly without spinning, splitting, sharp edges, or gaps between its parts. The surrounding material should be secured without severe crushing, tearing, or wrinkling. Inspect both sides and apply a controlled pull that reflects the intended use. A loose result may indicate the wrong barrel length, insufficient setting force, an incorrect washer, or mismatched tooling. A flattened or cracked fastener may indicate too much pressure. Grommet press accessories can assist with positioning and equipment setup when they are compatible with the press.
