Can I Write on My Laminated Document?

Updated on Mar 08, 2026

The short answer is yes. However, not all laminated is equally writable. Matte and glossy laminating film will give you very different results when it comes to writing.

Writing on Glossy Lamination

You can write on glossy laminating film with pens and markers. However, this writing will not be permanent and will be able to be wiped away. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a use for it. Glossy lamination is perfect for writing on presentations, demonstrations, and proposals where you can utilize it like a dry-erase board. Additionally, you can make your documents reusable. This can be handy for worksheets, adding additional items to a recurring grocery list, chore charts and more.

If you are going to use this method we recommend you use dry-erase markers to ensure your writing comes off as cleanly as possible. Additionally, if you use a pen on glossy lamination and push too hard you may end up denting the film.

Writing on Matte Lamination

If you are looking to protect your documents but still be able to write on them like paper matter lamination is the way to go. On matte film, you can use marker, pen, and pencil to mark your document permanently. Note this also means that dry-erase markers will be permanent too. This is ideal for creating laminated sign-up sheets, calendars, maps, and more, creating a durable sheet that you can add information too as you need without fear of it getting wiped away.

They specifically make laminating pouches for this purpose with matte film on one or both sides.
