This is a product demonstration for the Akiles Versamac. When speed and dependability matter the most, you need the Versamac. It's an industrial strength high capacity electric punching machine specifically designed to meet the demanding needs of commercial environments. It punches up to 55 sheets per punch to get the job done faster. Whether it's coil, wire, and more, we've got you covered with up to 14 different color coded dies sets to choose from. It features an extra wide 14" single punching length with an open throat for legal size sheets and larger documents. One of the most unique features of the Versamac is that the dies allow you to adjust the depth margin of the holes so you can decrease the margin for smaller books and increase the margin for larger books to ensure that the pages don't tear out with usage. In addition, our dies also address the issue in other machines where sheets get stuck along the walls of the channel resulting in punching error. With our revolutionary fitted channel design, your documents never get stuck resulting in a consistent punch across all sheets. In the event of a paper jam, the Versamac features an auto-reverse button and is also equipped with a manual reverse driver to reduce unnecessary downtime. The extra large waste drawer comes with a transparent flap window so that the punched chips can flow out and prevent jamming. Let's run a coil binding project. Here we have 4:1 pitch die with oval holes. Adjust the side margin guide using the color coded guide which is green for oval 4:1 pitch. Test the punch with a scratch paper. To punch, you can either step on the foot pedal or press the punch button. Check to make sure you don't have any partially punched holes. If you do, you can remove any of the fully disengageable pins by simply lifting the cover and pulling out the pin using the handy paper size guide. Slide the die set back in, lock the latch into place, and you're ready to punch. Once you punched through your documents, you can jog your document on the U-shaped channel to aid the forming of the spine for faster and easier inserting. To change a die, you simply unlatch the safety lock and slide out the die set. Then slide the wire die in. Once the die is locked in, the green light will appear, and the machine is ready for operation. Use our built-in document scale to quickly measure document thickness and easily select your diameter size. Place the wire on the built-in wire holder. And now you can insert the document while you punch. Now you're ready to use a wire closer such as our FlexiCloser featuring a one-touch mechanism to automatically detect wire size and close perfectly across different sized wires. Akiles Versamac Modular Interchangeable Die Binding Punch Review

In the world of interchangeable die binding punches, there are two heavy hitters: the GBC Magnapunch, and the Rhino Tuff HD7700. Akiles Versamac was clearly designed to compete with these two, and like them, it was created to be used by larger businesses, in-plant print facilities and production floors. In fact it is a great choice for anyone who finds themselves needing high volume productivity and flexibility in binding styles. Here we will take a closer look at the Versamac, and give you some of the machine's pros and cons.

Pros:

Akiles claims the Versamac has a large capacity, and they are right. We found that the oval coil die could easily punch thirty sheets. This puts the Versamac on par with the HD7700 and far ahead of the GBC Magnapunch.
Among modular punching systems, the Versamac is unique in that it includes a built in wire hanger and a spine former for use in spiral coil binding, as well as a sizing guide. We found these pretty handy.
The Versamac has a reverse function that utilizes an electric motor, in order to help with any possible paper jams. Other machines do not have this feature. Plus, the Akiles also includes a special tool to manually reverse the punching mechanism in the case of a really bad paper jam.
Another feature we really liked was the dual controls. To operate the machine, the user can either use the included foot pedal or push a button on the machine itself. If you are just going to be punching a few pages, you don't need to go through the trouble of setting up the foot pedal. That is a really nice feature.
The Versamac is priced far lower that the machines it was designed to compete with, and that includes the dies. The oval coil die is also significantly less expensive than its counterparts over at Rhino Tuff and GBC. It is nice to see a machine with all of these features that doesn't compromise either features or quality.

Cons:

One thing that we weren't crazy about was that, unlike the GBC and Rhino Tuff, the Versamac's dies arrived without having been oiled at the factory. There is, of course, oil included in the box, but the user needs to apply it. After you oil the dies you will want to punch a bunch of scrap paper to clean off excess oil before you start using the machine on important presentations or proposals.
When you use the Versamac, you may find the die lock a bit difficult to engage, and you will to make sure that the die lock is fully engaged. It shouldn't cause too many headaches, as long as you make sure the die is fully locked in place. This is similar to the die lock system used by the Rhin-O-Tuff HD-7700.
We found the color coding system on the front of the machine (meant to aid you in setting the edge guide) a little hard to decipher. The guide is designed to allow you to quickly set up the machine for use with all of the different die sets. It just has so many markings that it is hard to figure out.
This is a bigger, heavier machine than either the HD7700 or tha MagnaPunch. Not a big deal if you have the room for it, but something to consider if you will be needing to move it around a lot.

Recommendation:Overall, if we were in the market for a reliable, heavy duty modular punch, we would not hesitate for a second to purchase the Versamac. It is feature-rich and it represents a great inexpensive alternative to the Rhino tuff HD7700 and the GBC MagnaPunch. Compare the features and price for yourself, we are sure that you will see the difference.

Great machine/ Great Company

I’m so glad I found this machine!! It punches through my chipboard covers to make my journals. It seems very durable and well made. I Know it seems like a lot of money but, it’s well worth it. I’ve tried the other machines that are cheaper on Amazon and they just don’t do the job like this one does. You won’t be disappointed.

Heavy Duty Machine

I have not had much time to play around with it yet, but it is built like a tank and seems to be a very solid machine that is pretty easy to use. I have no experience with coil binding, yet my first attempt went really well. I didn't realize I needed to order the coil crimper separately, so with my trial run I used a pair of needle nose pliers and managed okay - promptly ordered the crimpers though and a couple larger sized coils. I believe this will provide much more functional binding for us in comparison to the comb binding that we were using.
